LARGEST COCAINE BUST IN MARITIME HISTORY

COAST GUARD ISLAND, ALAMEDA, Calif. - The Coast Guard will conduct media availability here Monday to enable media coverage of a 40,000-pound drug offload from three separate cocaine busts, including the largest in maritime history.

WHAT:

  • Offloading of approximately 20-tons of cocaine seized by Coast Guard Cutter Sherman in mid-March off the coast of Panama.  Drugs will be carried off the ship stacked, counted and prepared for shipment.  Drug evidence from other seizures made by the Sherman on this patrol will be offloaded.
  • VIP's will thank the Sherman's crew for their successful patrol and issue their "snowflake" drug bust emblems for placement on the ship.
  • VIP's and other agency representatives, and the ship's commanding officer and crew members will be available for one-on-one interviews.

WHEN:          

8:30-10:30 a.m., Monday, April 23, 2007

9:00 a.m. - VIP remarks congratulating the ship's crew and partner agencies for their role in the drug bust and present snowflake emblems to Sherman's crew at 9 a.m., followed by media availability with VIP's, crew, agency reps.

VIDEO/IMAGERY:  Video and still imagery of the drug bust will be released.

AERIAL COVERAGE NOTE: Because of the large amounts of drugs, offload operations will actually begin at approximately 6 a.m. and can be easily observed by helicopter if you wish to direct your traffic helos overhead to promo the story.
