New District Commander for U.S. Coast Guard

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The U.S. Coast Guard appointed a new commander for the 11th Coast Guard District this morning, during a change of command ceremony at Coast Guard Island in Alameda.  Rear Admiral Craig E. Bone has taken over command from Rear Admiral Jody A. Breckenridge.

Rear Admiral Bone comes to District 11 from Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC, where he served as the Assistant Commandant for Prevention.  In this capacity, he directed national and international policy and programs for port, vessel, and facility safety and security, waterways management including navigation systems, icebreaking, bridge administration and marine transportation system policy. Prior to reporting to Coast Guard Headquarters, Rear Admiral Bone served as the Chief of Staff for the 14th Coast Guard District, headquartered in Honolulu. Rear Admiral Bone served as Captain of the Port New York/New Jersey and Commander of Coast Guard Activities New York.  A 1977 graduate of the U. S. Coast Guard Academy, Rear Admiral Bone began his Coast Guard career as a deck watch officer aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Hamilton in Boston

Rear Admiral Breckenridge has commanded the 11th District since March 31, 2006.  District 11 is comprised of the states of California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada, as well as thousands of square miles of Pacific waters.  During Rear Admiral Breckenridge's command, the men and women of the district have responded to more than 3454 search and rescue cases, saving more than 648 lives, inspected 7700 commercial vessels, and are credited with record-breaking drug busts in the Eastern Pacific Ocean with more than 282,130 pounds of cocaine seized.  Additionally, approximately 14,215 pounds of marijuana were seized in the Baja Corridor.
