U.S. COAST GUARD POLLUTION EQUIPMENT DEPLOYMENT DRILL

San Francisco, CA - The U.S. Coast is conducting a drill of its pollution response capability by deploying the Spilled Oil Recovery System (SORS) onboard the 225 foot Coast Guard Cutter ASPEN from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, 2007.  The exercise will take place in Raccoon Strait within San Francisco Bay.

The SORS is a U.S. government owned mechanical oil response system that can be used by a U.S. Coast Guard Federal On-Scene Coordinator for skimming and containing persistent oil only when all commercial resources are inadequate or unavailable.  The Oil Pollution Act of 1990 mandated Coast Guard buoy tenders such as Cutter ASPEN, homeported at Yerba Buena Island, San Francisco, CA, to be equipped with oil skimming system capability.

While industry has the primary responsibility to plan, equip, and train for oil spill response, the U.S. Coast Guard maintains this equipment to augment industry capability.

Those interested in knowing more about this drill, please contact Lieutenant Anya Hunter at (415) 748-0112.
