Coast Guard patrols the water and cliffs during surf competition

ALAMEDA, Calf. - The Coast Guard spent the afternoon patrolling the waters and cliff sides near Half Moon Bay, Calif., during the Mavericks surfing competition.

The large waves brought out the surfers as well as their support boats a group of spectators in the water.  The Coast Guard Cutter Sockeye and a rescue boat from Station Golden Gate were both on scene all day in case the need arose to respond to an emergency.  A rescue helicopter from Air Station San Francisco was on stand-by in case the rescue crews were needed near or on the near-by cliffs.
