Interagency Oil Spill Response Exercise to be Held in Del Norte and Curry Counties

CRESCENT CITY, Calif. - U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Francisco, Sause Bros. Inc., California Department of Fish and Game Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR), and Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), have scheduled an oil spill response exercise on May 14 and 15 in Del Norte and Curry counties.

The National Preparedness for Response Exercise Program (PREP) Smith River 2008 scenario will involve a collision between a fuel barge and a container ship 35 nautical miles west of Crescent City, and result in a major oil spill. The response will bring industry, federal, state and local organizations together to effectively mitigate a simulated multi-state pollution incident.

Full Scale Exercise operations will include the deployment of oil recovery vessels at Brookings Harbor and at the mouth of Smith River, as well as the use of Shoreline Clean-up and Assessment Teams (SCAT) to conduct evaluations of the coastline.

PREP exercises are held every three years in the northern California coastal area to exercise the spill response capabilities of federal, state, local and industry partners.

Local media are invited to the news briefing that will be held as part of exercise play.

WHO: Smith River 2008 PREP Exercise Unified Command.

WHAT: The Unified Command will hold a media briefing as part of the exercise to provide local media an opportunity to obtain information about the drill.

WHEN: 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 14, 2008.

WHERE: Del Norte Fairgrounds, Main Exhibit Hall, 421 Hwy 101 N., Crescent City, Calif.
