Coast Guard Cutter Eagle Arrives in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (July 23, 2008) - The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle led a parade of 32 tall ships during today’s Festival of Sail on San Francisco Bay. The Eagle will be docked at Pier 30/32 through July 27 and available for public tours.
The Eagle is a three-masted barque that carries square-rigged sails on the fore and main masts. The 295-foot long sailing vessel has served the Coast Guard since 1946 and is used as a training platform for cadets and officer candidates to learn leadership, teamwork, seamanship and navigation skills. After its stay in San Francisco, the Eagle will visit five other West Coast ports, including San Diego, Los Angeles, Astoria, Tacoma, and Victoria, British Columbia. The Eagle is homeported in New London, Conn.
Coast Guard Sector San Francisco will have public information booths at the Marine Education Village at Hyde Street Pier, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on July 24-27, and at the Green Village at Pier 30/32, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 25-27. The public is encouraged to visit these booths to find out more about Coast Guard missions, boating safety, and environmental protection. There will also be a recruiter present during the Festival for those interested in career opportunities in the Coast Guard and Coast Guard Reserve.
