Old Guard Meets The Future In San Francisco Bay

bertholf_eagle_web.jpg

SAN FRANCISCO (July 23)-- The Coast Guard Cutter Eagle (center) passes the cutter Bertholf along the San Francisco waterfront as the San Francisco Fire Department's fire boat, Phoenix, sprays jets of water into the air, heralding the arrival of the Bertholf.  The Eagle is in San Francisco Bay as part of the 2008 Festival of Sail activities.  The Bertholf, which will be home ported at Coast Guard Island in Alameda, Calif., is the first of the Coast Guard's new National Security Cutters.  The new cutters are set to eventually replace the aging fleet of 378-foot cutters as the Coast Guard's long-range patrol asset.  (Coast Guard photo by Petty Officer Kevin J.
